Swimming to a cure: Using zebrafish for therapeutic discoveries in MDS

June 23, 2020

Dr. Bowman is an Associate Professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Her laboratory focuses on uncovering the molecular mechanisms underlying how hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) form, how they respond to injuries, and what goes awry in HSC diseases, such as myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Some of their recent work has uncovered novel vulnerabilities that selectively target HSCs carrying mutations in the MDS-associated factors SF3B1 and DDX41. Their studies combine the advantages of zebrafish and mammalian systems to explore the genetic regulation of HSC biology with an eye towards translation to improve outcomes for patients post-myeloablation or with MDS.
